Complementary Therapies

Some non-medical therapies can be effective in inducing relaxation, reducing anxiety and changing the perception of pain. Facilitation of the body’s natural restorative process can bring about an improved sense of well-being, providing comfort during distressing circumstances. Our trained volunteers are available to provide in-home Complementary Therapy treatments to community clients.

Trained volunteers provide the following Complementary Therapies:

  • Reiki
Reiki has Japanese roots, and is a technique used for stress reduction and relaxation. It is performed by a trained practitioner, and promotes overall well-being.  Reiki is administered by a practitioner gently placing their hands over (or directly on top of) the body of the person receiving the service.
  • Therapeutic Touch
Therapeutic Touch was developed in North America over 40 years ago, and is widely used internationally.  It is a holistic, evidence-based therapy that promotes balance and well-being, and is performed by a trained practitioner. Depending on the preference of the person receiving the service, Therapeutic Touch can be administered with no physical touching, or with light touch on the shoulders, arms and legs.
  • Simple Massage
Simple Massage is meant only to provide comfort and induce relaxation.  Volunteers administer this service.  It uses gentle touch and can be performed on hands, arms, feet and legs.

Music Therapy and Art Therapy are also available to community clients.  These programs are facilitated by trained professionals in these specialities.  Availability of this service fluctuates.  Contact us for more information.
